If there was any question as to whether Pinterest was making waves across the net, it was erased today when I encountered the first clear example(s) of what I am dubbing "pinterspam." Here's what I saw on a post about a healthy crepe recipe:
The comment by "Marthana" is a classic example of a spam comment; it's not even tangentially related to the post and contains a link to a service/product that the commenter is promoting. Checking the user, I see they have one follower, no pins, no boards and no likes. There is currently no method for me to report this person as a spammer or even flag the comment; only the person who pinned the original image can delete the spam
Another example is directly below Marthana's long comment; there is a duplicate comment from someone promoting another service/product. However, at least that user made the effort to build a presence on Pinterest with pins, boards, and followers.
As the beta opens ever wider and more people sign up, it's inevitable that spammers will find their way in. I will be curious to see how Pinterest manages this -- I find the "report spammer" option on Twitter to be generally effective as a crowd-sourced management tool and could see a similar function working well here.
